A Brief on Some Different Types of Rolling Papers

For many who enjoy smoking dry herbs and tobacco, there’s no better experience than rolling their own.

Types of Rolling Papers

Most rolling papers on the market nowadays are made from hemp or rice paper, though some are also made from wood pulp, sisal or other plant-based fibers. These are some of the most common.

• Rice Straw

Rice straw paper is very thin, light, and airy. Though it is fragile and tears easily, it folds and crimps readily, burns slowly, and produces little ash, making it a favorite among many who like to roll their own.

• Hemp

Hemp rolling papers are probably the most common style of rolling paper on the modern market. Hemp rolling papers, which are made from the pulp of the non-woody parts of cannabis plants, are slow-burning, produce relatively little smoke, and burn evenly. They’re also less likely to self-extinguish out than rice papers.

Hemp rolling papers are also popular because it is cost-effective to produce unbleached, all-natural, and organic rolling papers from hemp.

• Flax

Not as common as hemp or rice rolling papers, flax fiber rolling papers are still used by some brands that make papers and cones. Flax also produces a light, thin paper, much like rice paper, that produces little smoke or flavor, and burns slowly.

These are some of the more common types of rolling papers. There are also rolling papers made from wood pulp and a material known as “esparto,” but due to the harshness of the smoke these types produce, they are fairly rare nowadays.

Cones, Rolling Papers, Tips

While rolling papers are made in a wide range of sizes, including wide, 1 ¼”, 1 ½”, double wide, and king sizes, they are not the only option for smokers looking to roll their own.

Many rolling paper companies also produce pre-rolled cones, which are tapered, conical paper rolls with a filter at one end and open at the other. The smoker simply packs in herbs or tobacco, rolls or twists the end, and enjoys.

Some smokers roll cigarettes without filters, but some rolling paper producers also sell tips or filters to facilitate rolling, filter the smoke, and prevent the tobacco or herbs from falling out one end.
