What You Need to Know About Tanks with Mesh Coils vs. Regular Coils

Kingdom Vapor may be your source for wholesale vaping supplies but we’re also your source for inside information and news about trends in the vaping world. One of these trends has been the rise of mesh coils and their popularity when compared to standard coils.
Some tanks, like the SMOK TFV12, are compatible with mesh coils. Ever since mesh coils have hit the scene they’ve grown in popularity with vapers, and some are just not going back to the old standard.
Let’s take a look at what makes mesh coils like these so popular.
How Coils Work
First things first: all coils, mesh or standard, effectively function in the same way. The battery runs a small current through the coil, which heats up. The e-liquid, which is in contact with the coil, gets hotter until it vaporizes.
Both mesh coils and standard coils operate according to this basic principle. However, standard coils and mesh coils are physically different. Standard coils are typically arranged as a “coil” of wound-up, thin strands of electrical conductors, usually in a spiral configuration. Mesh coils, by contrast, are usually made from a thin plate of metal that has had small holes punched through it, giving it the appearance of a “mesh,” not unlike a net. Like standard coils, mesh coils are typically made from steel or kanthal.
Why It Matters: Mesh Coils
Though it might seem like a superficial difference, mesh vaping, like sub-ohm vaping, has some significant implications for the vaping experience. These are the most important takeaways.
Mesh Coils Have a Larger Surface Area
The first and most important thing about mesh coils is that, by their nature, they have a larger surface area. This means that more of the e-liquid is in contact with them during firing.
This larger surface area offers two distinct advantages when compared with standard coils, which have to do with heating up more quickly, more evenly, and more consistently.
Mesh Coils Heat Up More Rapidly
Since the surface area of mesh coils is greater, it enables them to heat up more rapidly. This means that you can fire up a cold mod in just a few seconds if it has a tank with mesh coils and a healthy battery.
For on-the-go vapers, this is a bonus because there’s much less of a delay during fire-up - you can take a hit when you need it, as needed, without messing up your flow.
Mesh Coils Heat Up Evenly
Not only do mesh coils tend to heat up more rapidly, but they also heat up more evenly, which is another big reason that attracts many vapers to mesh.
Let’s face one of the realities of vaping - some devices just don’t often deliver consistent hits. Sometimes the hit is satisfying and potent, and other times, it’s just not what it could be.
Well, mods and tanks with mesh coils tend to deliver a more consistent vaping experience overall than their standard coil counterparts. Vapers who love mesh know they can more or less expect the same hits, each and every time.
That said, there’s another big benefit associated with the enhanced even heating of mesh coils.
Mesh Coils Are Generally Longer Lasting
Another unfortunate reality of vaping is that, just as some devices are more or less inconsistent, standard coils can burn out with heavy use, or just over time.
Sometimes coils burn out because they are not evenly constructed, and because the electrical current gets bottlenecked at a thin “pinch point,” that overheats and burns out. When this happens, you need to replace the coils.
It’s less likely to happen with mesh coils because there are no such weaknesses in mesh coil design. Consequently, mesh coils are typically much longer-lived than standard coils, simply on the basis of more even heating.
Mesh Coils Deliver More Potent Clouds and Vapor with Less Power
Mesh coils are also much more economical than standard coils, and are able to deliver intense clouds and potent hits of flavor using less power than standard coils.
This is one of the most common observations associated with mesh coils, with many vapers reporting that when they hold all else equal, mesh coils deliver much more powerful hits. Some even claim they improve the flavor of the vapor itself, delivering a more potent, improved experience.
Cloud chasers will also love the fact that mesh coils, with their rapid firing and even heating, can produce really rich, thick clouds in a fraction of the time, as compared to standard coils.
You Might Be Able to Upgrade to Mesh Coils without Swapping Your Mod’s Tank
The other great thing about mesh coils is that while many modern tanks come compatible with mesh coil configurations, some tanks can also be upgraded with mesh coils. That gives you the flexibility to potentially upgrade your current mod without needing to ditch your existing tank.
Is It All Positive? The Disadvantages of Mesh Vape Coils
While it’s apparent that there are a lot of benefits associated with mesh coils, some vapers have noted some potential drawbacks as well.
The main thing that some vapers note is that mesh coils tend to consume larger quantities of e-liquid than standard coils. That’s part of the bargain - you get more intense clouds and flavor but of course, slurp up more e-juice in the process.
One more thing to note is that some vapers don’t find mesh coils to be well suited for nicotine salts. Nicotine salts, which have a higher concentration of nicotine than freebase e-liquids, can be a little bit intense for some vapers when used with mods that have mesh coils in the tanks. That’s just something to think about.
