At the high concentrations needed, freebase nicotine became extremely harsh, causing throat irritation. The solution to this problem was found in nicotine salt.

The salt form of nicotine naturally occurs in the leaves of the tobacco plant in lower concentrations than freebase nicotine. Despite this fact, freebase nicotine can easily be converted into nicotine salt by introducing it to a solution of malic acid. The word acid may seem scary in this context, but malic acid is a natural acid found in many fruits. It is also the ingredient that produces the “vinegar” flavor in salt and vinegar chips.

When freebase nicotine is mixed with malic acid, the resulting nicotine salt is significantly less harsh than freebase nicotine, though it is slightly harder for our bodies to absorb. This means that large amounts of nic salt could be used so a small pod of e-liquid could keep users satisfied all day. Even if not all of that nicotine is absorbed by the body, more than enough is absorbed to satisfy the vape user.

A traditional vape pod, like those produced by Juul, provides enough nicotine salt e-liquid to satisfy most users for an entire day of use. The average disposable vape pen can deliver around 200 to 300 hits, delivering about as much nicotine as a pack of cigarettes. The batteries on these vapes are also designed to last long enough to vape the entire e-liquid pod, typically using the same battery size as the Juul itself.

Unlike the Juul and other pod devices, these vapes are built using a solid design. There is no way to access the e-liquid compartment or recharge the battery. Once the tank has been emptied, the entire device can be disposed of much like a disposable Juul pod. This system offers users the ability to enjoy the convenience of a pod vape while being able to choose any flavor they want.
